The two systems, and why the older one persists

Extension springs stretch; torsion springs twist. An extension pair hangs alongside each horizontal track, connected through pulleys and cables to the bottom brackets, and each spring works independently. A torsion setup mounts on a bar above the door with drums at both ends, so a single balanced assembly lifts both sides together. Extension springs were standard on residential doors into the late 1970s, and they persist for one practical reason: they need almost no headroom. That is exactly the situation in the earliest Naperville subdivisions, where the land for Maplebrook was bought in 1960, Cress Creek in 1962 and Saybrook in 1963, and where garages were framed with very little space between the top of the opening and the ceiling joists. Balance, first. Headroom is the first measurement, and sometimes it is the answer

A standard torsion assembly needs roughly 12 inches of clear space above the opening for the bar, the drums, the springs and the bearing plates. Many of the 1960s garages here do not have it. Low-headroom conversions exist: a double-track low-headroom kit runs the top rollers on a separate rail, and a bar mounted at the rear of the horizontal tracks with a cable drum arrangement will work in as little as three or four inches. Those kits cost more and take longer, and if the ceiling is finished the framing has to be checked before anything is ordered.

The door has to be worth the conversion

Conversion re-uses the door, so the door needs to be sound. Three checks. Is it sectional, or is it a one-piece jamb-hardware door? A one-piece door cannot be converted; it needs a sectional replacement, at which point the springs come with the new door. Are the sections solid, without rust-through at the bottom or torn stiles? A door that needs a new section and a new spring system is usually a door to replace, which is covered under full replacement.

Sizing the springs to the actual door

The torsion spring is sized from the door's real weight, its height, the drum diameter and the required cycle life. The correct method is a scale: disconnect the opener, lift the door on a bathroom scale under the bottom section, and read the weight rather than estimating it from panel count. Wire diameter, inside diameter and overall spring length come out of that number. After winding, the balance test is the proof: at waist height, disconnected, the door holds still.
