The 1993 line, and why the age of your opener decides the visit

The federal safety standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR Part 1211, applies to units manufactured on or after January 1, 1993. It requires primary inherent entrapment protection — the opener senses the obstruction itself — plus one of three additional arrangements, in practice almost always an external secondary device: the photo eyes across the opening, or a monitored edge sensor on the bottom of the door. An opener made before that date has neither, and no adjustment can add them. That is the single clearest reason to replace rather than repair an old unit. Inspections are one item on the service list; the pre-1993 outcome usually leads to a new opener.

The two tests that matter, done the way the standard describes

First, the obstruction test. Place a solid object one inch high on the floor in the door's path, in line with the operator, and close the door. Under the standard the operator has to begin reversing within two seconds of contact and then return the door to the fully open position. A door that stops without reversing fails. A door that keeps pushing fails badly. Second, the beam test: with the door closing, break the photo-eye beam with an object — not a hand — and the door must reverse to full open. If either test fails, the door should be left disconnected until it is corrected rather than used carefully.

What else gets checked, and what a failure looks like

Spring condition and the hand balance test at waist height. Lift cables at the bottom bracket, where fraying begins. The bottom brackets themselves, which are under full spring tension. Roller bearings and end hinges. Track alignment and the lag bolts into the framing. The manual release cord, which must be reachable and functional. Whether any manual lock is still able to engage while the opener is connected. Whether the wall control is mounted at least five feet up and out of a child's reach, and whether it is within sight of the door. And the close-force setting, because a force turned up to overcome a stiff door has defeated the primary protection the standard requires. A pre-1993 opener, a missing safety cable inside an extension spring, a frayed lift cable and a door that will not reverse are the four findings that mean stop using it now.
